The challenge? 

The prestigious four-star Abbey House Hotel & Gardens, set on 14 acres of land in Barrow-in-Furness, is a stunning blend of luxury and history.

With increasing guest expectations and a global push towards sustainability, the hotel sought to reduce its carbon footprint while offering electric vehicle (EV) charging for both visitors and the wider community.

However, being a listed property, it needed a solution that not only met practical needs but also respected the property’s aesthetic and heritage.

The Be.EV solution

We worked closely with the hotel’s team to deliver bespoke EV charging infrastructure – at no cost to Abbey House – that seamlessly integrated with its historic surroundings.

We started by conducting a detailed discovery process, assessing both the site’s requirements and local demand. With the limited power available at this remote site, we installed a 200kW Kempower Powerbank, which dynamically balances charging power between 4 ultra-rapid bays.

The charger intelligently load balances up to four EVs (>150kW each) to ensure each EV charges as quickly as possible. To that, we added a further 6 bays of slower 7kW AC charging for guests staying overnight or for several hours, which also benefit from cheaper off-peak charging tariffs for 10-hours every night.

Our solution was designed to enhance the guest experience without compromising on aesthetics or functionality. All charging bays are clearly marked, with plenty of space to make the charging experience as convenient and as accessible as possible.
