Revitalising Cities with EV Charging

Urban regeneration isn’t just about new buildings and green spaces – it’s about rethinking infrastructure to create sustainable, future-ready communities.

One of the most crucial aspects of modern urban transformation is the transition to electric vehicles, and with it, the development of accessible, high-speed charging networks.

The new Be.EV ultra-rapid Charging Hub at Hulme Retail Park is a prime example of how EV charging is playing a central role in reshaping urban landscapes.

Hulme: A Community in Transformation

Hulme, a vibrant district within Manchester, has been undergoing a remarkable renewal.

From sustainability-focused projects like the Hulme Community Garden Centre to large-scale housing initiatives such as ‘Hulme Living’ by One Manchester, the area has seen an influx of investment and innovation.

One of the key components in making Hulme more sustainable is enhancing its transport infrastructure – enter Be.EV’s latest ultra-rapid charging hub.

Bridging the Charging Gap

A major challenge for urban residents considering EV adoption is access to convenient charging. Nationally, around 65% of UK households have access to off-street parking, but this figure drops dramatically in cities like Manchester, where an estimated 60% of households lack driveways. Public EV charging hubs, especially those with ultra-rapid capabilities, are essential in addressing this disparity and making sustainable transport viable for all.

The new Be.EV site at Hulme Retail Park features six ultra-rapid charging bays, delivering up to 165 miles of range in just 20 minutes. Powered entirely by renewable energy from Octopus Energy, these chargers make EV ownership more accessible to urban drivers who cannot charge at home.

Powering Regional Growth and EV Adoption

The North West has emerged as the fastest-growing region for EV adoption in the UK, with more than one million electric vehicles registered in Greater Manchester between 2009 and 2023. Be.EV’s growing network plays a crucial role in supporting this surge, ensuring that reliable, ultra-fast charging is available to all communities – not just those in affluent areas.

The Hulme hub is the first to be funded under Be.EV’s landmark £55 million debt financing deal with NatWest and KfW IPEX-Bank. This financial backing underscores a significant commitment to expanding EV infrastructure nationwide, with Be.EV on track to reach 1,600 charge points by the end of the year.

A Win-Win for Retail and the Community

Charging hubs like the one at Hulme Retail Park not only serve local EV drivers but also support surrounding businesses. By integrating charging infrastructure into shopping destinations, Be.EV is encouraging footfall to local retailers while giving drivers a practical way to recharge both their cars and their energy levels.

The Future of Urban Regeneration

Be.EV’s Hulme hub exemplifies how EV charging infrastructure is more than just a convenience – it’s a key driver of urban renewal. By making sustainable transport accessible, supporting businesses, and integrating into the fabric of modern cities, projects like this accelerate the transition to a cleaner, greener future.

With each new charging hub, Be.EV is not just powering cars – we’re powering the future of our cities.
