Our Taxi Membership Scheme is coming – Frequently Asked Questions

What’s happening?

We are launching our Be.EV Taxi Membership Scheme giving GM-licenced taxi drivers (hackney or private) access to a planned network of dedicated charge points.

Following the introduction of a tariff system for Be.EV users on 1 October 2021, taxi members will also benefit from a discount on the standard Be.EV member rapid charger tariff when using a taxi-only charger.

Why are you introducing a tariff?

The free charging subsidy on the Be.EV network will be coming to an end. The tariff will provide a more sustainable network across all 10 boroughs of Greater Manchester to meet the increasing demand and promote the switch to electric vehicles.

We have agreed with TfGM an additional discount to registered Taxi members for use on the planned roll out of taxi dedicated chargers.

When will it be introduced?

The tariff came into effect on 1st October 2021. We realise that we have lots of work to do to get more dedicated Taxi charge points in the ground and we have been working away with Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) and the Local Authorities to identify the right sites for development. We have plans to install 60 dedicated EV taxi charging as quickly as possible, with the first of these due to go live in early 2022. All 60 due to be fully operational by early 2023.

What will the tariff be?

Taxi members will benefit from an additional discount on the standard Be.EV member rapid charger tariff when using a taxi-only charger:

Rapid:

  • £0.25 Taxi Membership Rate (only available at dedicated taxi charge points)
  • £0.35/kWh Pay As You Go (PAYG*) at all public charge points
  • £0.32/kWh Standard Be.EV Member Rate at all public charge points

Fast:

  • £0.25/kWh Pay As You Go (PAYG*) at all public charge points
  • £0.22/kWh Standard Be.EV Member Rate at all public charge points

* Pay As You Go rate applies when paying by contactless or webpay

All rates are inclusive of VAT at 20% following the HMRC ruling in May 2021

Why are you introducing the tariff now when the dedicated taxi charging points have yet to be installed?

Shortly after the launch of the taxi membership scheme there will be one dedicated taxi rapid charger at Hardman Street in Spinningfields in Manchester city centre. This will be for the use of Manchester City Council-licensed hackney cabs only. The first dedicated rapid charger available to all Greater Manchester-licensed hackneys and PHVs is currently scheduled to go live early in 2022 as part of our plans to install 60 taxi dedicated chargers by early 2023.

Where will the new dedicated taxi charging points be located?

The locations of the OZEV-funded 60 new dedicated taxi charging points have not yet been confirmed. Once the sites have been finalised, details will be available on the TfGM Electric Travel EV charging projects pipeline page at electrictravel.tfgm.com/ev-charging-projects-pipeline.

Can I continue to use the other Be.EV charging points?

Yes, you can continue to use all the other Be.EV charge points on the network. The Be.EV Taxi membership discount however is only available at dedicated taxi charge points as we continue to work hard to increase the numbers of dedicated taxi charge points across Greater Manchester. Also, the usual member discounts still apply to all other chargers on the network.

I’m a taxi driver – what do I need to do to join?

You MUST be a GM-licensed taxi driver (hackney or private hire) to join. For more information on how to join the taxi membership scheme please keep checking our dedicated Taxi page where the exact details of how to join will be announced soon.

How long will the new tariff be valid for? Will it be reviewed/increased again?

The tariff will be reviewed in collaboration with TfGM, it will need to stay in line with the market as well as ensuring that it encourages usage and uptake of electric vehicles. Any changes will be notified in advance to members via the usual channels.

How does the new tariff compare to other providers?

We have reviewed all competitors in the market and ensured that our tariffs are fair. We also offer members a discounted rate so if you’re not already a member please sign up here.

What will the income generated by the tariff be used for?

The income generated will be used to maintain, operate and upgrade the network of EV chargers in the region.

How can I pay?

Once registered as a Be.EV taxi member, you will be able to use your membership RFID card or app to charge your vehicle. Payment will be taken via Direct Debit from your bank using the payment details set up as part of the registration process. To start and finish your charging session, simply follow the instructions on your mobile screen and on the charge points.

Contactless payment is not available on taxi dedicated charge points to ensure only validated Greater Manchester-licensed taxi drivers (hackney or private hire) can use the charge points.

How do I get a statement or receipts for business purposes?

Statements are issued on a monthly basis once payment has been taken. This will be emailed to the email address you have used to register your Be.EV account. Please note that when logging into your account during the month the discount will not be visible as this is applied at the end of each month before payment is taken. At the end of the month, your monthly statement and the payment taken from your account will include the taxi membership discount.
